Its eastern neighbor is Argentina, the northeastern one is Bolivia, while the Drake Passage is located to the south of Chile, and Peru is located to its north.

Living in Chile

Even though Chile is a second-world country, it is rapidly moving up the ladder. You will experience all the luxuries of a First World country with the quaint lifestyle of an under-developed one. Chile has an honest culture and the level of public corruption in this country is very low. It is also a safe place to live, so if you are moving here alone, you don’t have to worry about a thing. You can also explore a lot of new places and spend some time amidst nature and forget the stress of everyday life. When you move to Chile, you will not only fall in love with its breathtaking views, but also the lifestyle of the people.

Politics in Chile

The Congress of Chile is made up of a 38-seat Senate and 120-member Chamber of Deputies. The term of senators in Chile is 8 years, while that of deputies is 4 years. The elections in this country are governed by a binomial system that rewards the two largest parties contesting in the elections. Chile holds nationwide elections to choose a presidential, parliamentary, regional, and municipal candidate. Chile allows its foreign residents, who are older than 18 years of age, and have lived in the country for more than 5 years, to cast a vote in the elections.

Economy of Chile

One of the most economically stable nations in South America, Chile is a high-income economy and has a high standard of living. Copper mining is responsible for 20% of the country’s GDP and also 60% of its exports, as Chile produces 1/3rd of the world’s copper. In 2009-2010, Chile was ranked as the 30th most competitive country in the world and the first in Latin America, by the Global Competitiveness Report.

Buying or Renting Property in Chile

Whether you are looking for colonial villas with an authentic Chilean vibe or for a modern apartment-building with a pool and gym, you are certain to find one in Chile. Santiago, being the capital and the largest city, is the most preferred location for people to stay when moving into this country. When renting an apartment in Chile, look for properties that come with utility services included, as paying from them separately each month can turn out to be a little pricey. If you plan to rent a car when living in Chile, parking won’t be much of a concern in suburban neighborhoods as there is ample parking space on the streets, but in the cities, it is smarter to make sure you get a parking spot within your gated community.
